Frequently Asked Questions

I want to be a voice actor. How do I get started?

Like any professional career, you start with training. That’s what we do. We train voice actors in group and private classes using the Voices Carey Method and original scripts. We’ll build you into a skilled, well-rounded performer ready to tackle any category of the work in the real world of auditions and bookings.

Where are the classes?

All classes are online. Group classes via Zoom, private lessons via Zoom, Skype or Google Meet.

When are classes?

Online adult group classes are Monday, Wednesday or Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30PM or Saturdays from 9:30AM to 12:30PM Central Time. Students are to attend the same class day each week.

How much are group classes?

$169 monthly. Get in early because class fills quickly. Class size is limited. You’re paying for the month, not the number of classes. It’s up to you to show up. Come to as many of the 4 classes per month on your chosen weekly class day as you can. To see a sample class, here is a video link: https://www.voicescarey.com/voice-acting-classes

I have no experience. Can I still join?

Our classes are designed so voice actors at any skill level can jump right in. Even total beginners.

Is there an age requirement?

Our adult classes are for actors 16+. For students aged 10-15, we offer private lessons. Enrollment for minors must be completed by their parent or guardian.

Do I need any special equipment to participate?

No special equipment required. You can start with just a laptop, a pad or a desktop computer. As long as you have a camera and a microphone. We ask that you not use your phone.

When can I start?

You can start anytime during the month, after you complete and return our class intake forms and pay your invoice at least 24 hours before you want to start.

Can I change class days every week?

No, for two reasons. The first is that changing days creates scheduling and billing issues. The second is that our instructors are assessing your skills to foster your growth over the course of these classes, and that works better with a consistent instructor.

Makeup Classes

There are no make-up classes, or extending your enrollment period for a missed class. If class can't proceed one day due to a Voices Carey issue, we will extend your enrollment to honor the lost class.

What about private classes?

Enroll in one-on-one lessons and learn intermediate or advanced voice acting techniques from working professionals. These classes are more intense and personally focused than our group classes. They're all about you. We focus on recognizing your personal strengths as a performer and then building upon those strengths, fueling your evolution as a voice actor. $125/hr via Zoom, Skype, or Google Meet.

How do I progress through the curriculum? What’s my path?

The recommended path for our voice actors is group class first, then private class, then production of a professional demo reel. However, if you have acting training or experience, then privates might be better or even straight to the demo. We will consult you on your individual voice acting journey.

Voices Carey Demos

We produce national quality demos in any category you choose. Examples: commercial, character (anime/video game), narration, audio book, etc. Industry standard length is 60 seconds. We cover a lot in that time. Our main goal is to clearly establish your vocal print, conveying broad emotional color and acting range. The mission is to show agents, clients and casting directors your talent, skill and versatility in one minute. Go to https://www.voicescarey.com/our-voice-acting-demos to hear demos we've produced.

Demos in all categories are $1850. We know actors aren't made of money, so we allow you to pay in installments, the last payment when we deliver the finished demo.

Everyone has a unique sound, so one size does not fit all. Which is why we custom write your demo material, rather than using generic, existing copy as some places do. Our demo production is a totally seamless process. We direct you via Skype or Zoom as you record in your own studio. Since 90% of voice over today is recorded in home studios. You want the technical quality of the demo to be representative of your home rig.

As you get closer to recording a professional demo reel, you’ll want to build a more professional recording setup at home. For more, see our Building a Home Studio blogs: https://www.voicescarey.com/voices-carey-voice-acting-blog
